Understanding Light Reflectance Values (LRVs) in Stair Nosing Compliance

When it comes to stair safety and accessibility in commercial buildings, visual contrast plays a critical role. One of the key compliance elements in the UK’s stair nosing regulations is the requirement for sufficient contrast between stair nosings and adjacent surfaces — and this is where Light Reflectance Values (LRVs) come in.

What Are Light Reflectance Values (LRVs)?

LRV is a numerical measure (from 0 to 100) that indicates the amount of visible light a surface reflects. A value of 0 represents absolute black (no light reflected), while 100 represents pure white (total reflection). In the context of stair safety, LRVs are used to ensure that visually impaired individuals can perceive the edge of each step clearly and confidently.

What Does UK Regulation Say About LRV Contrast?

According to the following UK building regulations and standards:

  • BS8300:2009
  • BS8493:2008
  • Approved Document M (ADM 2004)

There should be a minimum of 30 points difference in LRV between stair nosings and the surrounding step surfaces.

Best practice: Stair nosings should incorporate a contrasting insert that is 50–65mm on the tread and 30–55mm on the riser.

Why Does LRV Matter in Stair Design?

  • Prevents slips and trips by making the edge of the step more visible
  • Enhances accessibility for users with partial sight
  • Supports Equality Act compliance (formerly DDA)
  • Improves safety in dim or variable lighting environments

To help specifiers, architects, and facilities managers meet these standards, we've created a fully illustrated, brand-neutral guide on Light Reflectance Values for stair nosing PVC inserts.

How to Select LRV-Compliant Stair Nosings

When selecting products for commercial projects:

  • Check the manufacturer’s stated LRV for the insert colour
  • Use contrasting colours between nosings and treads
  • Match nosings with appropriate insert widths (50–65mm)
  • Always verify BS8300 / Part M compliance if unsure
