How to Install Stair Nosings: BS 8300 UK Compliant Guide

What Are Stair Nosings?

Stair nosings are trims fitted to stair tread edges. They improve grip, protect against wear, and provide visual contrast for safety. Most of our stair nosing profiles meet BS 8300:2018 and Part M building regulations.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

  • Tape measure, pencil/chalk
  • Mitre saw or hacksaw
  • Drill and screwdriver
  • PU or MS polymer adhesive
  • Wall plugs (for concrete stairs)
  • Chosen stair nosings

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Measure and Cut: Measure each tread and cut your nosing to size using a mitre saw.
  2. Clean the Stair Edge: Ensure it's dry, dust-free, and level.
  3. Mark and Drill: Use chalk to mark your fixings. Pre-drill if needed.
  4. Apply Adhesive: Use PU or MS polymer adhesive on the nosing underside.
  5. Fix in Place: Press the nosing firmly, screw down if applicable.
  6. Insert Anti-Slip Strip: Press it in after fixing.(if not pre-bonded onto aluminium profile)
